MONROVIA – The Monrovia City Court has ruled that there is sufficient evidence for former House Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa and three others to face a full criminal trial in connection with alleged attempts to destroy the Joint Chamber of the House of Representatives.
In a ruling handed down on Friday, Magistrate Ben Barco determined that the prosecution had established a prima facie case during preliminary proceedings, justifying the transfer of the matter to Criminal Court A. This legal threshold, Magistrate Barco explained, does not require proof beyond reasonable doubt, but rather reasonable grounds to suspect the accused of criminal conduct.
Koffa, along with Dixon Seeboe, Abu B. Kamara, and Jacob C. Debbie, is accused of conspiring to procure explosives and gasoline used to set fire to the Joint Chamber of the Legislature on December 18, 2024. The alleged incident sparked public outrage and raised national security concerns.
According to court records, former Speaker Koffa was not present during Friday’s pronouncement of the court’s decision. Magistrate Barco ordered the clerk of court to immediately forward all legal instruments and case files to Criminal Court A, clearing the way for a formal trial.
The City Court’s ruling marks a significant development in a case that has drawn national attention due to the political stature of the individuals involved. With the matter now officially transferred, the accused are expected to appear before Criminal Court A in the coming term for trial proceedings.
As the legal process continues, observers are closely watching what could become one of the most politically consequential trials in Liberia’s recent history.
