GJPHRAN CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION ON WAR AND ECONOMIC CRIME COURT ESTABLISHMENT

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Global Justice, Peace, and Human Rights Advocacy Network (GJPHRAN) once more urgently calls on President Joseph Nyumah Boakai to expedite the establishment of the War and Economic Crime Court (WECC). The delay in signing the approval for this crucial court is causing significant distress and unrest among the victims and families affected by past conflicts, who eagerly await justice.

Recent delays attributed to the government’s handling of the War and Economic Crime Court’s approval process have not only hindered justice but have also exacerbated tensions, risking continued civil unrest. GJPHRAN emphasizes that immediate action is necessary to uphold the rule of law and to provide long-awaited justice for the numerous victims of Liberia’s civil wars and economic crimes.

GJPHRAN, A consistent Civil Society group led by Amb Dr. Marie Scott Wilson states “ President Boakai needs to do his due diligence to his country by stopping further procrastination tactics from occurring and sign the long-overdue document for the WECC to begin”.

“Moreover, Victims and their families have suffered immensely and deserve the closure and justice that the establishment of the WECC promises. Each day’s delay prolongs their pain and may contribute to eroding trust in the nation’s commitment to justice and reconciliation”.

GJPHRAN is concerned about the Impact of Delays in establishing the court not only denies justice but also impedes Liberia’s progress toward reconciliation and healing. It is crucial for the country’s future that leaders act swiftly to address past atrocities through a lawful, transparent, and effective judicial process.

GJPHRAN strongly urges President Boakai to sign the necessary documents without further delay. The network also calls on international partners and concerned entities to support Liberia in this crucial phase to ensure that the WECC is established and functional as promptly as possible.

GJPHRAN remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for justice, peace, and human rights in Liberia. The network also appeals to international communities to assist in any capacity necessary to facilitate the immediate establishment of the War and Economic Crime Court, ensuring that it operates effectively and transparently.

This press release addresses the urgent call for action by GJPHRAN regarding the establishment of the War and Economic Crime Court, emphasizing the need for swift government action to prevent further unrest and ensure justice for victims and their families.
