GKTC LAUNCHES AGRICULTURE PROJECT TO BOOST FRESH FOOD PRODUCTION

Date:

LIBERIA – The Grand Kru Technical College (GKTC) in Barclayville City has launched a large-scale agricultural initiative aimed at enhancing fresh fruit and food production. On Saturday, March 8, 2025, faculty, staff, and community members gathered at the college’s 50-acre site to commence the “Go Green” agriculture and farming project.

The initiative, led by the Department of Agriculture under the direction of Mr. Pius Nyanforh, will utilize a significant portion of the college’s land to provide hands-on training for agriculture students. The project focuses on cultivating fresh fruits, vegetables, and other food products, which will serve as both an educational tool and a potential source of revenue for the institution.

According to the college, the agricultural program will offer practical farming experience to students in the Agriculture Department while promoting self-sufficiency and community engagement. Participants on the opening day worked together to clear land and prepare it for planting, marking the first step in what is expected to be an ongoing commitment to agricultural development.

The Acting President of GKTC, Associate Professor Dr. Josephus Gbala-hinnig Moses Gray, praised the collective effort of faculty, staff, and community members who contributed to the project’s launch. In a statement on behalf of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Gray expressed gratitude to those who supported the initiative, emphasizing that their contributions reflect a commitment to the college’s vision of blending academic learning with practical experience.

Dr. Gray also acknowledged the leadership of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, who actively participated in the agricultural effort. He highlighted the importance of the project not only for student education but also for fostering a sustainable model of food production that could benefit the broader community.

The Grand Kru Technical College currently offers two-year Associate of Science and Associate of Arts degrees in six academic disciplines, including Agriculture, Education, Engineering, Computer Technology, Natural Sciences, and Business and Public Administration.

The institution is governed by a Board of Trustees chaired by Professor Weade Kobbah-Boley. While Dr. Gray serves as the Acting President, a new president is expected to be appointed soon by the Visitor of the College, the President of Liberia.

The “Go Green” agricultural project marks a significant step toward expanding GKTC’s academic and practical offerings. As the initiative progresses, the college aims to provide valuable hands-on experience for students while contributing to local food security and economic development.
