MONROVIA – The Grand Kru Legislative Caucus has issued a strong statement of support for its member, former Speaker and current Grand Kru County District #2 Representative Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, as he faces legal proceedings stemming from allegations of arson and related charges. The statement, dated Saturday, June 7, 2025, and signed by Caucus Chairman Senator Numene H.T. Bartekwa, describes the situation as “deeply disturbing” and expresses empathy for Koffa’s “uncomfortable experience.”
The Caucus emphasized that the charges outlined by the Liberia National Police are bailable under Article 21 of the 1986 Constitution, which grants bail to all accused persons except those charged with capital or grave offenses as defined by law. Citing Koffa’s status as a sitting lawmaker and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Caucus argued that he poses no flight risk and should therefore be released on personal recognizance.
The statement called on the Ministry of Justice and the Judiciary to uphold Koffa’s constitutional rights and ensure that due process is followed throughout the legal proceedings. The Grand Kru lawmakers stressed that the trial must be free, fair, and impartial, noting that every citizen is entitled to such treatment under Liberian law, regardless of their political affiliation or position.
The Caucus also urged citizens and residents of Grand Kru County to remain calm and supportive of Koffa during what they described as a challenging period. They pledged unwavering solidarity with him as he navigates the judicial process, expressing confidence that he will be vindicated once the courts have examined the evidence.
By affirming their belief in Koffa’s innocence and calling for respect for the rule of law, the Grand Kru Legislative Caucus signaled that the case has implications beyond one individual as it touches on the integrity of Liberia’s justice system and the protection of constitutional rights for all.
