HOR MANDATES INVESTIGATION INTO LATE-NIGHT WASSCE ADMINISTRATION IN RIVERCESS COUNTY

MONROVIA – The Plenary of the House of Representatives has directed its Committee on Education to investigate the Ministry of Education for permitting the administration of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at 7 PM in Yarpa Town, Rivercess County.

The decision was made during the 3rd Day Sitting of the 2nd Quarter of the 1st Session of the 55th Legislature on Thursday, May 23. The mandate followed a communication from Representative Steve Tequah of Electoral District #2, Rivercess County, who raised concerns about the late-hour examination.

“I am writing to request your assistance in inviting the Minister of Education to provide an explanation for the decision to have administered the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) test on May 21, 2024, at 7 PM in Yarpa Town, Rivercess County,” Rep. Tequah stated in his communication.

Tequah emphasized that the timing of the exam raised serious concerns regarding the fairness and accessibility of the testing process for all students. He highlighted that administering the exam at such a late hour could potentially disadvantage students, as they may not perform optimally during night hours.

“I believe that plenary intervention in this matter will help shed light on the reasons behind this decision and provide clarity to the people of Rivercess,” Tequah added.

After the communication was read, Montserrado County Electoral District #4 Representative Michael Thomas proposed a motion to refer the matter to the House’s Committee on Education for a thorough investigation. The committee has been given two weeks to probe the situation and report its findings back to the plenary.

The investigation aims to determine the rationale behind the Ministry of Education’s decision and to ensure that future examinations are conducted in a manner that is fair and equitable for all students. The outcome of this investigation is anticipated to provide much-needed clarity and to address the concerns of the affected students and their families in Rivercess County.
