HOUSE SPEAKER ALLOCATES EXTRA US$9 MILLION TO MINISTRY OF HEALTH

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA  – Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has disclosed that, after extensive discussions with President Joseph Boakai, an additional US$9 million has been designated for the Ministry of Health.

In the FY-2024 Draft National Budget, the Ministry of Health was initially allocated US$57,871,358. With the supplemental US$9 million, as revealed by Speaker Koffa, the health budget will rise to US$66,871,358.

Speaker Koffa made this announcement during his keynote speech at the official launch of the first-ever World Health Organization pre-qualified Malaria Vaccine and the 2024 Mass Insecticide-treated bed net distribution campaign in Gbelia Town, Rivercess County, on Thursday, April 25, 2024.

The Representative for Grand Kru County electoral district #2 attributed this extra funding to the remarkable efforts of Health Minister, Dr. Louise M. Kpoto. He stated that, in collaboration with Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, they engaged in negotiations with President Boakai to secure the additional funds.

“The Minister has demonstrated exceptional leadership. Yesterday [Wednesday, April 24, 2024], the Pro-Temp and I met with the President, and our budget committee diligently identified additional revenue. Therefore, Madam Minister, I am delighted to inform you that, through our discussions with the President, we have decided to allocate an extra US$9 million to your ministry,” affirmed Speaker Koffa.

He underscored the government’s commitment, particularly that of the House of Representatives, to stand by and bolster the Ministry of Health in managing and improving the nation’s healthcare sector.

Moreover, he emphasized the necessity of reinforcing government health facilities nationwide to ensure equitable healthcare access for all citizens, irrespective of their status or background.

In reference to the theme of World Malaria Day, “Time to Deliver Zero Malaria: Invest, Innovate, Implement,” Speaker Koffa highlighted healthcare as a matter of social justice in Liberia, particularly noting the vulnerability of women and children to malaria.

He praised Minister Kpoto for her proactive approach, commending her decision to host the World Malaria Day and the Malaria Vaccine launch in Rivercess County, where malaria cases are on the rise.

In conclusion, Speaker Koffa reiterated the House of Representatives’ commitment to supporting and providing the necessary resources for adequate medical care, echoing President Boakai’s dedication to this cause.
