HUMAN RIGHTS GROUP ACCUSES BOAKAI GOVERNMENT OF VIOLENCE AND ABUSE AGAINST OPPOSITION CDC

Date:

MONROVIA – A Liberian human rights organization has leveled serious accusations against President Joseph Boakai and his administration, alleging blatant power abuse and a violent onslaught against the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) since he took office nearly nine months ago.

The Global Justice Peace & Human Rights Advocacy Network (GJPHRAN) specifically attributed last weekend’s violence at the CDC headquarters to the actions of the Boakai government. According to the group, a police-led attack on Friday triggered violent confrontations that resulted in numerous injuries and disrupted economic activities on that day.

GJPHRAN condemned the violent suppression of the CDC as a grave violation of political rights, emphasizing that it undermines citizens’ rights to political participation, freedom of expression, and the right to associate. The organization described these actions as a direct affront to the sovereignty of the Liberian people.

In its statement, the local human rights group warned that such blatant encroachments on the leading opposition party’s headquarters could have serious repercussions. It called on the international community to take notice and intervene in defense of democratic principles in Liberia.

Dr. Marie Scott Wilson, the head of GJPHRAN, explicitly blamed the Boakai administration for the violent attack on the CDC, labeling it a reckless and dangerous attempt to destabilize the peace in the country. The situation continues to raise concerns about the state of democracy and human rights in Liberia.
