MONROVIA – Political commentator and journalist Henry Pedro Costa is reportedly being considered for the position of Minister of Presidential Affairs, sources told Smart News Liberia. Costa, a prominent member of the opposition All Liberian Party, supported the ruling Unity Party during the 2023 Presidential Election that brought President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to power.
The potential appointment follows the untimely death of Hon. Sylvester Grigsby, a respected Liberian diplomat, who passed away on August 9, 2025, in the United States. The Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, established on December 31, 1971, is central to assisting the President in administering state affairs, coordinating the Office of the President, and consulting with various governmental bodies to support executive functions.
In January 2025, Costa shared on his official Facebook page a personal reconciliation with President Boakai, signaling a strengthened bond. “Last night was a truly unforgettable reunion with my uncle, President Joseph N. Boakai. Our reconciliation meeting, which lasted almost two hours, was a heartfelt and solemn experience that I will cherish forever,” he wrote. He added, “As we sat together, sharing stories and laughter, my uncle’s trademark humor shone through. At one point, he quipped, ‘When the prodigal son returns home, it is the cow that suffers because it is slaughtered for the feast.’ His words, though laced with humor, held a deeper truth about the sacrifices made for the sake of love and family.”
Supporters within the Unity Party have expressed optimism about Costa’s potential appointment. A party insider, who requested anonymity, said, “Costa understands both the opposition and the ruling party. He is uniquely positioned to bridge gaps and ensure the President’s agenda is implemented efficiently. His experience and integrity make him an ideal candidate for this critical office.”
Political analyst Jerome M. Flomo also weighed in, stating, “If appointed, Costa could bring a new dynamic to the Ministry of Presidential Affairs. His journalistic background and political insight could enhance transparency and coordination within the Executive Branch.”
When contacted by Smart News Liberia, Costa did not directly comment on the possibility of his appointment but emphasized the importance of reconciliation and unity in public service. “This reunion would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of some very special people. To those who fought for this moment to happen, I extend my deepest gratitude. Your love, support, and perseverance have brought healing and restoration to a once-cherished relationship,” he said.
