GBARNGA, BONG COUNTY – A spirit of joy and inspiration filled the grounds of HEGON Semi-Junior High School on Saturday as the school hosted its 2025 Kindergarten Graduation and Closing Ceremony. The event brought together students, parents, teachers, and community members to celebrate not only academic success but also the promise of a brighter future.
Guest speaker Nukanah Kollie, a respected Liberian journalist and youth advocate, delivered an uplifting address centered on the theme, “Planting Seeds for a Great Tomorrow.” His speech encouraged families, educators, and the community at large to see children as carriers of potential and purpose—seeds that must be carefully nurtured to secure Liberia’s future.
Growing Hope, One Child at a Time
During his remarks, Kollie paid tribute to the parents, teachers, and faith leaders who consistently support children’s development. He likened students to “seeds God has planted,” emphasizing that love, patience, and consistent care help children grow into their purpose.
Using a short, relatable story of a young girl who faithfully tended a seed until it blossomed into a fruitful tree, Kollie reminded attendees that growth often comes slowly—but the results can transform communities.
Instilling Values That Matter
Speaking directly to the graduates, Kollie highlighted how everyday actions such as saying “thank you,” helping a friend, or listening to a teacher are all ways of planting values that shape character.
He explained that:
- Gratitude plants respect,
- Helping others grows kindness,
- Obedience to parents leads to blessings and long life, and
- Prayer and spiritual discipline build faith.
He urged students to hold on to these lessons, as they form the roots of leadership, compassion, and responsibility.
Saluting Educators and Caregivers
Kollie used part of his speech to honor the adults behind the scenes—parents, teachers, and caregivers—describing them as the “gardeners” who sow and water seeds of purpose in children.
Quoting Proverbs 22:6, he reminded them of the biblical truth: training up a child in the right way ensures a strong future. “You are not just teaching numbers and letters,” he said. “You are helping mold the heart and soul of our nation.”
A Personal Pledge of Support
To reinforce his message with action, Kollie announced his personal commitment to sponsor the tuition and uniform of the DUX—the highest-achieving student—for the upcoming school year. He also committed to providing school supplies to aid the student’s academic journey.
“This small gesture,” he said, “is a way of reminding us all that when we lift up a child, we lift up the future of Liberia.”
