COW FARM, BONG COUNTY – In a heartwarming turn of events, 12-year-old Nowai Flomo from Cow Farm, Bong County, departs her rural village for a better life in Monrovia. This positive change has been made possible through the efforts of a dedicated Liberian journalist, Nukanah Kollie, who, through his reporting and advocacy, connected Nowai to a goodwill donor based in the United States.
Nowai’s story had first captured the attention of many after Kollie reported on her challenging life in the remote corners of Zota District. Under the towering trees of Cow Farm, a weak 12-year-old girl was seen walking barefoot across farmland, her hands rough from years of labor, and her eyes reflecting a grief far beyond her years. While other children her age sat in classrooms learning, Nowai toiled on a farm, fighting for survival a life imposed upon her by the violent tragedy that befell her mother.
In June 2017, Nowai’s mother, Doris Nyah, was tragically killed by her husband, Moses Porkpah, in an act of madness that shocked the entire town of Cow Farm. Porkpah shot Doris with a single-barrel gun during a domestic dispute, leaving Nowai an orphan at age 5. The tragedy did not end with Doris’ death, as it marked the beginning of Nowai’s unrelenting hardship.
After losing her mother, Nowai was taken in by her guardian, Tohun Togbah, and extended family, but instead of receiving the nurturing care she deserved, she was forced into a harsh life. With no access to school, she spent her days helping relatives on their farm, struggling to find enough food, clothing, and medical care. Each passing year seemed to widen the gap between Nowai and any hope of a better life. Togbah, in her plea for help, had expressed deep concern for Nowai’s future, saying, “This child has lost everything. She’s never been to school. She has no clothes, no medical care, and barely enough food to eat.”
This desperate situation touched the heart of Nukanah Kollie, who, after hearing about Nowai’s plight, reported on her situation, shedding light on the challenges she faced. Kollie’s empathetic and detailed reporting caught the attention of a generous American donor who, moved by Nowai’s story, agreed to sponsor her relocation to, Brewerville -Monrovia.
Meanwhile, in a heartfelt conversation with Jeremiah Laywayee, Nowai’s uncle, the gratitude for Kollie’s role in her relocation was clear. Jeremiah expressed his deep appreciation for the journalist’s efforts in bringing attention to Nowai’s difficult circumstances, which ultimately led to the support of the U.S. donor. He shared his happiness about the new opportunity that Nowai would have in Monrovia: “I am filled with joy because Nowai has a chance to go and learn something better for us.”
Jeremiah went on to thank everyone who played a part in making this transition possible, especially Nukanah Kollie, whose work brought attention to the family’s plight. He praised Kollie for the integrity and compassion he showed in reporting the story, highlighting the role of honest journalism in bringing about positive change. “Journalists should always report with integrity and not be biased. When journalists like Nukanah Kollie share the real stories of our people, it leads to positive changes in our communities,” Jeremiah said, acknowledging that it was Kollie’s reporting that made Nowai’s relocation possible.
Jeremiah also expressed his gratitude to the U.S. sponsor, calling them a blessing to the family, and shared that Nowai’s future now holds hope. He extended an open invitation to those who wish to help other children in the community, showcasing the collective desire for further support.
“We have many children here, and we ask for more help,” Jeremiah added. “The blessing that Nowai received is a beacon of hope for all of us. We are grateful for the media’s role in making this possible, and we hope more stories like this will inspire change.”
Through the tireless work of Nukanah Kollie, Nowai Flomo’s life is about to change for the better. This story is a testament to the power of good journalism and how it can bridge gaps, create opportunities, and bring hope to those in need. Jeremiah’s words echo a message of gratitude, unity, and the potential for a brighter future, thanks to the kindness and dedication of individuals like Kollie.
Nowai’s story is a reflection of the deep societal challenges faced by many children in Liberia, particularly those affected by domestic violence.
