JUDGE ORDERS ARREST OF REPRESENTATIVE MARVIN COLE FOR PERSISTENT NON-SUPPORT

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Monrovia City Court has issued a writ of arrest for Bong County District #3 Representative, Josiah Marvin Cole, over allegations of “persistent non-support” to his 11-year-old daughter, Rebecca Cole. The writ was issued following a complaint filed by Madam Clara Asibu, the mother of the child, who alleges that Representative Cole has failed to provide financial or material support since the child’s conception.

Judge Ben Barco ordered the arrest of the “living body” of Representative Cole, instructing that he be brought before the court to answer for his alleged failure to fulfill his parental responsibilities. The writ, signed by Court Clerk Daniel McGill on November 26, 2024, highlights the alleged violation of Section 16.5 of Liberia’s Penal Law, which addresses persistent non-support.

According to Madam Asibu, Representative Cole has “failed, refused, and neglected” to support her and their child, leaving them without adequate food, shelter, and clothing. She described the situation as unjustifiable and in violation of both legal and moral obligations.

The official writ reads, in part:

“You are hereby commanded to arrest the living bodies of Marvin Cole… and forthwith bring him before the Monrovia City Court… to answer to the charge of persistent non-support… contrary to the statutory laws of Liberia.”

This case has sparked widespread public interest, given Representative Cole’s prominent position in Liberian politics. Critics have called on lawmakers to set an example by adhering to the laws they are tasked to uphold.

The Monrovia City Court is expected to hold Representative Cole accountable if found guilty of the allegations. The case has also reignited discussions about parental responsibility and child welfare in Liberia.

Madam Asibu’s legal complaint underlines the ongoing struggles faced by her. Advocates for children’s rights on social media have expressed solidarity with Asibu, emphasizing the need for public officials to lead by example in providing for their families.

Representative Cole has yet to respond publicly to the allegations, and it remains to be seen how the case will unfold in court.
