KOFFA: ‘UNDER MY WATCH, RULE OF LAW WILL PREVAIL,’ REJECTS RESIGNATION RUMORS AMID LEGISLATIVE DISPUTES

Date:

MONROVIA – In a resolute press conference at the Capitol Building in Monrovia, Speaker of the 55th Legislature, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, addressed the rising tensions within the House of Representatives. Surrounded by fellow lawmakers, supporters, and sympathizers, Speaker Koffa rejected calls for his resignation and reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the rule of law. He strongly criticized a faction within the legislature, known as the “Disenchanted Majority Bloc,” for what he described as disruptive attempts to undermine the legislative process.

The Speaker began by outlining the root of the current impasse, explaining that the dissenting group had convened meetings without constitutional or legislative authority. Koffa clarified that while the group could exercise their right to freedom of association, their actions held no legal weight within the context of the House’s established rules. He emphasized the importance of preserving order and adhering to the constitution, which remains the foundation of Liberia’s democratic governance.

Koffa noted that the escalating situation had drawn the attention of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which dispatched a special delegation to mediate the dispute. This intervention, led by the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, was a response to broader concerns about the stability of Liberia’s democratic institutions, particularly given the fragile political landscape in the region. Koffa expressed his appreciation for ECOWAS’s involvement, acknowledging the challenges they faced in addressing the underlying issues.

According to Koffa, the ECOWAS delegation proposed a six-point resolution as a framework for resolving the dispute. The resolution included provisions for investigating complaints against the Speaker and ensuring decorum in the chambers. Although the leadership of the House agreed to consider the proposals in good faith, the so-called majority bloc later dismissed the resolution, claiming it was merely the personal opinion of one of their representatives. This reversal, Koffa said, undermined the progress made during the negotiations and further delayed efforts to restore order.

Amid rumors of his potential resignation, Speaker Koffa categorically dismissed the notion, asserting that resignation was a voluntary act that he would not undertake. He argued that calls for his removal lacked merit and were driven by personal agendas rather than legitimate concerns. Koffa declared that his leadership was grounded in the will of the people and the principles enshrined in the Liberian Constitution.

Addressing allegations against him, Koffa challenged his detractors to bring their complaints to public scrutiny. He expressed confidence in his ability to defend himself and urged the accusers to present credible evidence if they believed he had violated any rules or laws. “Let me defend myself in public. If you have evidence, present it,” he stated, adding that attempts to destabilize the House for personal gain must cease immediately.

Koffa also emphasized the importance of maintaining stability within the legislature to ensure that it fulfills its mandate to the Liberian people. He criticized the disruptive actions of a minority group within the House, accusing them of prioritizing personal interests over the nation’s welfare. Despite these challenges, Koffa reaffirmed his commitment to serving the public and leading with integrity.

During the press conference, Koffa highlighted the role of the Liberian people in legitimizing governmental institutions. He underscored that his leadership was a reflection of the trust placed in him by the electorate and that he remained accountable to the citizens of Liberia. “All power is inherent in the people,” he declared, adding that his administration would continue to operate transparently and in accordance with the law.

Koffa expressed gratitude to his colleagues and supporters who stood by him during this challenging period. He commended their dedication to upholding the rule of law and their efforts to ensure that the House of Representatives remains a functional and effective institution. Their unwavering support, he said, was a testament to their shared commitment to Liberia’s democratic principles.

As part of his commitment to improving the functioning of the legislature, Koffa announced logistical enhancements for the staffers, including the acquisition of new vehicles to support their work. This initiative, he explained, was a demonstration of his administration’s dedication to ensuring that the House operates efficiently and effectively.

The Speaker acknowledged that the path forward would not be without difficulties. He expressed uncertainty about the outcome of the current dispute but reaffirmed his determination to adhere to the rule of law. “I don’t know how this journey ends for me, but under my watch, the rule of law will prevail,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to protecting the integrity of Liberia’s democratic institutions.

Koffa concluded the press conference by reiterating his resolve to lead with honor and to remain steadfast in the face of adversity. He called on all members of the House to prioritize the nation’s interests over personal ambitions and to work collaboratively toward achieving the legislative body’s goals.

The Speaker’s remarks underscored his dedication to upholding the principles of good governance and ensuring that the House of Representatives remains a cornerstone of Liberia’s democracy. His firm stance and unwavering commitment to the rule of law serve as a reminder of the importance of leadership that prioritizes the nation’s welfare above all else.
