MONROVIA – Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa, Representative of Grand Kru County Electoral District #2, has called for calm and peace following violent protests in Chengbetee Town linked to an unresolved murder case. The statement was issued on Friday, January 9, 2026.
“I wish to first call on the women of Upper Bolloh District, the residents and citizens of Chengbetee Town, and the entire people of Electoral District #2 to remain calm and peaceful during this difficult moment,” Koffa said, addressing concerns over rising tensions in the southeastern county.
Koffa acknowledged the anger and frustration surrounding the alleged murder of an unidentified woman, emphasizing that the demand for justice is legitimate. “The concerns raised by the women and communities are justified. However, violence, arson, and mob actions will only worsen the situation and expose innocent lives and property to harm,” he warned.
The representative also urged Liberia National Police, the County Administration, and all relevant security authorities, including chiefs and elders, to act with urgency and transparency in handling the matter.
Koffa said the alleged suspect, reportedly having fled Grand Kru County to Nimba County, must be investigated swiftly and, if necessary, transferred back to Grand Kru so justice can be seen to be done.
He condemned the arson incident in Chengbetee Town on January 7, 2026, when protesters set a shop ablaze, noting that such actions must be professionally addressed to prevent recurrence. “The incident must be strongly condemned and professionally handled to avoid any recurrence of the burning of people’s homes and properties,” Koffa said.
The lawmaker stressed that restoring public trust requires presence, communication, and decisive action, not silence or delay. He called for county authorities and security agencies to engage directly with community leaders, women’s groups, and traditional authorities to calm tensions and prevent further unrest.
“Grand Kru County deserves peace, justice, and leadership that is responsive to the cries of its people,” Koffa said, pledging his commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure calm is restored and justice pursued without fear or favor.
The protest that sparked the violence reportedly grew out of frustration over the killing of the unidentified woman about two months ago. Locals said anger intensified after learning that the alleged suspect remains in detention in Nimba County while police investigations continue.
Koffa concluded by appealing for unity above division. “Let us put Grand Kru County and Mama Liberia first, above violence and division,” he said, reiterating his call for peaceful engagement and lawful pursuit of justice in the county.
