MARYLAND CO., LIBERIA – On Wednesday, July 18, 2024, tensions escalated in Pleebo as aggrieved citizens reportedly broke into the premises of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) and LIBENERY, vandalizing property and stealing cash. The unrest drew attention from local LEC officials, the Liberia National Police led by J. Max Roberts, the Pleebo City Corporation, and key government figures, including Mr. Standford Neufville from the office of District #2 Representative, Hon. Anthony F. Williams.
The disturbance at the Pleebo City Hall highlighted growing dissatisfaction among residents regarding the ongoing installation of electricity meters, which they claim comes with exorbitant costs. The angry crowd expressed their frustration over the high fees associated with the meters and the recent disconnection from the power grid due to their refusal to recharge the meters.
The citizens revealed that county Superintendent Hon. Henry Cole had previously instructed the suspension of all meter installations until further notice. Despite this directive, the installation process continued, leading to increased resentment among the populace. The protesters have demanded a reduction in the cost of the meters from $130 to $30.
Mr. Henry Hodge, Manager for LIBENERY and LEC in Maryland and River Gee Counties, defended the meter installation, stating that it is a mandatory requirement as outlined in the LEC operational booklet. He emphasized that the cost of $130 per meter is standard and that this practice extends nationwide, not just in Maryland County.
Hodge condemned the vandalism and urged local authorities to address the situation promptly to prevent further escalation. He called for a swift resolution to the issue, stressing the need for cooperation between all parties involved.
In response to the unrest, the Pleebo City Corporation, the Liberia National Police, LEC, and LIBENERY officials are engaged in closed-door discussions with the aggrieved citizens. The goal is to address the concerns regarding the cost of meters and find a viable solution. The installation of meters in the area has been temporarily halted until the citizens’ grievances are addressed.
The situation remains tense as all parties work towards resolving the dispute and ensuring that the concerns of Maryland County residents are adequately addressed.
