MONROVIA – Sam Gaye, the Director of Liberia’s Executive Protection Service (EPS), is seeking a public retraction from Eugene Nagbe, former Commissioner of the Liberia Maritime Authority and current Chief of Staff to former President George Weah, over defamatory comments made during a radio interview.
On April 9, 2025, Gaye’s legal representative, Senior Counsellor Kabineh M. Ja’neh, sent a formal letter demanding that Nagbe retract his accusations made on March 31, 2025, during an interview on OK FM with Julius Jeh. In the interview, Nagbe alleged that Gaye kept a photo in his bedroom depicting a gun aimed at former President Weah.
Ja’neh, who is also a former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia, strongly refuted Nagbe’s statements, calling them baseless and harmful. The letter emphasizes that such false accusations have caused substantial damage to Gaye’s reputation, both within Liberia and internationally.
The communication highlights that under Liberian law, any untrue statement that harms an individual’s reputation is considered a legal injury. Ja’neh asserted that the defamatory comments made by Nagbe meet this threshold, as they were both verbally expressed and capable of injuring Gaye’s standing in society.
The letter concludes by demanding that Nagbe issue a public retraction within 48 hours of receiving the letter, warning that failure to comply could result in legal consequences. As of now, there has been no response from Nagbe or the office of former President Weah regarding the issue.
