LIBERIA: ANTHONY QUIWONKPA, MEMBER OF PRES. WEAH’S OFFICE MASTERMINDED SHOOTING IN NIMBA – LEAVES ONE DEAD, SEVERAL INJURED

Date:

NIMBA COUNTY – A shocking shooting incident unfolded in Nimba County on Saturday, allegedly masterminded by Anthony Quiwonkpa, a member of President George Weah’s office and son of the late Thomas Quiwonkpa, former commanding general of the Armed Forces of Liberia. The incident occurred in the presence of a police escort, raising serious concerns about the security situation in the region.

Former rebel general Prince Johnson who is also a Senator of Nimba County said the shooting incident took place in broad daylight and has sent shockwaves throughout Liberia. Senator Johnson is said, it is believed to be a desperate attempt by President Weah to gain political support in Nimba County, as it has been alleged the Liberian leader has been using influential figures in the area to sow division among the local population.

Prince Johnson say a group of armed individuals, allegedly led by Anthony Quiwonkpa, opened fire on his convoy carrying Unity Party Vice Standard Bearer Jeremiah and himself  to a town for political campaign in the county. He alleged that Quiwonkpa had warned him in text message not to go to the town. Johnson narrated that QuiwonKpa in the text threatened bloodbath if the opposition ever enter the town.

And sure to his threat opened fire on the convoy; injuring several people, he said one man died from his wounds while he was being rushed to hospital.

Tensions had been escalating in the county in recent weeks due to political rivalries and the upcoming elections.

What made this incident even more disturbing is that it occurred in the presence of a police escort assigned to ensure public safety, said Senator Prince Johnson.

Questions are being raised about the competence and impartiality of the police officers involved. The failure to prevent the shooting has sparked public outrage and demands for a thorough investigation.

Local authorities and human rights organizations have called for swift action to bring those responsible to justice. The Liberia National Police have launched an investigation into the incident and have arrested few of the alleged culprits. The public demands that all necessary measures be taken to hold the perpetrators accountable.

President George Weah’s office has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. However, the allegations against Anthony Quiwonkpa, a staff member in the president’s office, have cast a shadow over the administration.

Critics argue that the president’s involvement with influential figures in Nimba County and the alleged use of such figures to divide the county for political gain is deeply concerning and undermines efforts to promote unity and stability.

The shooting incident in Nimba County serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by Liberia in its journey towards a peaceful and democratic society.

The incident highlights the need for a strengthened rule of law, unbiased law enforcement, and transparent governance to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.

Moreover, it is crucial for the international community to support Liberia in its endeavors to maintain peace and security for the well-being of its citizens.

As the story develops, further updates on the investigation and the condition of the injured victims are anticipated to be released.
