LIBERIA: HOR CONCLUDES FIRST QUARTER OF 55TH LEGISLATURE, PLANS MAY 2026 RETURN

CAPITOL HILL, MONROVIA – The House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, has officially adjourned the First Quarter of the 3rd Session of the 55th Legislature, with lawmakers scheduled to resume work in May 2026.

The First Quarter, which ran from January 15 to March 19, 2026, witnessed a series of legislative and oversight activities aimed at advancing national development and strengthening governance across the country.

Speaking during the closing session on Thursday, March 19, Speaker Koon revealed that the House held a total of 30 sittings during the period, comprising 20 regular sessions and 10 executive sessions, with no special sittings recorded.

Providing a detailed overview of the House’s legislative output, the Speaker disclosed that 23 legislative instruments were acted upon. This included four House bills passed, seven Executive bills approved, and 10 Senate bills concurred with. Additionally, one motion for reconsideration was processed, while no resolutions were adopted during the quarter.

Committee work remained robust, with 26 legislative instruments reviewed. These consisted of six House bills, six Senate bills, 14 Executive bills, and two petitions, reflecting the ongoing role of committees in shaping legislation before it reaches the Plenary.

In terms of engagement, the Speaker noted 18 appearances in Plenary, while communications processed during the quarter totaled 115. Of these, 99 came from lawmakers, five from the Executive, 10 from institutions, and one from an individual, underscoring the flow of information and requests handled by the House.

Overall, Speaker Koon highlighted that the House recorded 215 activities during the First Quarter, reflecting a high level of legislative productivity and oversight.

Commending members for their dedication and cooperation, the Speaker encouraged them to maintain engagement with their constituents during the recess. He also extended warm greetings to Muslims observing the holy month of Ramadan, urging unity, reflection, and national solidarity during the period.

With the First Quarter concluded, the House now stands adjourned, ready to reconvene in May 2026 to begin the next phase of legislative work and continue its mandate of advancing Liberia’s national development agenda.
