LIBERIA: IS VOODOO REALLY HAMPERING WEAH’S PERFORMANCE?

Date:

The former footballer has been a meek personality-always mingles with the down trodden. It was on this trajectory that he was overwhelmingly elected in 2017 to Liberia’s highest post-the presidency.

It’s over four years into his new job, Dr. George Weah has since changed consecution-no longer listening to the masses and shielded from the very people who voted him; which some of his disappointed supporters attribute to voodoo.

Rumor has spread across the nation that the once populace Dr. George Weah has fallen victim to Voodoo or some kind of fascination that has blurred his eyes and turning him away from the masses.

President’s Weah’s Popularity has fallen drastically a situation that has also befallen his ruling political party, the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).

In past years, Liberians made electoral choices based only on the insignia of the party irrespective of whether they know the candidate or not.

But, all has changed especially since Weah took the helm of power in the country. During his tenure as president, the country held several bi-elections and a senatorial mid-term election. President Weah and his party lost all.

How has this once popular Liberian super star that has been so loved, fallen so badly in his public rating, has been the question being asked in many quarters of the country?

Liberians who have spoken with Smart News in random interviews say it’s based on several factors, including voodoo, massive corruption, bad economic policies as well as his failure to really take control of leadership in the country.

They accused some Weah government officials of allegedly bewitching him to influence major decisions in his administration.

Some of these people allegedly steal massively that they used voodoo or some kind of charm to soften President Weah’s action against them, one interviewee told this medium.

Another noted that besides voodoo, some of the president confidantes block friends, relatives and other Liberians from meeting him so as not to here divergence views on prevailing situation in the country; noting that most of his confidantes are from a single tribe from the same region.

This situation is hurting the political life of the Liberian leader and may undermine his second term chances, one of his partisans opined.

As we speak, it is only few cabinet ministers that see the President regularly. Others who disagreed with this privileged class in the president’s cabinet are not allowed to meet him, a junior government official told Smart News. There is a struggle for influence in the president’s cabinet, he added.

He said, he believed voodoo is playing a part in this struggle, revealing that those who are not strong enough to fight this battle fall by the wayside. Our source refused to give details of what he meant.

Another attributed Weah’s fallen popularity to wrong economy decision, especially reduction of civil servants’ salaries. He noted that this was a decision that will continue to hurt President Weah chances and popularity in the country.

According to him, an economic decision that was intended to help the poor was wrongly executed. He explained that the ministry of finance purported policy to reduce presidential appointees’ salaries which was intended to be added to lower ranking civil servants, seriously went wrong.

He narrated that instead of increasing the lower ranking civil servants’ salaries, they were also cut; further increasing the economic woes of the poor masses.

According to him, until this “failed and misguided economic decision is reverse; Weah Government will always be defeated in subsequent polls.”
