LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – The Government of Liberia has officially launched its campaign for reelection to Category A of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, hosting a high-level Boat-Launch Reception on Monday, May 26, 2025, along the Thames River in London.
The event, which is being described by organizers as “history in the making,” marks the beginning of Liberia’s diplomatic and strategic push to retain a coveted seat among the world’s top maritime nations. Approximately 100 member states of the IMO and dozens of representatives from global maritime organizations are expected to attend the reception, signaling strong international interest and engagement.
Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the IMO, Robert Wilmot Kpadeh, is leading the campaign alongside Neto Zarzar Lighe, Commissioner of the Liberia Maritime Authority. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is also expected to grace the occasion, underscoring the national importance attached to Liberia’s representation at the IMO.
Category A of the IMO Council is reserved for states with the largest interest in providing international shipping services, and Liberia’s reelection would reaffirm its standing as a maritime powerhouse, particularly as one of the leading open registries in the world.
The event will serve not only as a diplomatic gathering but also as a showcase of Liberia’s maritime achievements, innovations, and commitment to safety and sustainability in global shipping.
