MONROVIA – The Inter-Ministerial Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Steering Committee in Liberia, comprising law enforcement agencies and governmental institutions, has intensified the activation of the Financial Crimes Working Group. This group aims to implement lawful, robust, and preventive measures to identify risks associated with money laundering and the methods used by criminals to move proceeds of crimes.
During the integrity group’s inaugural meeting on May 7, 2024, in Monrovia, the Inter-Ministerial Committee on AML/CFT and Proliferation Financing, chaired by the Ministry of Justice, emphasized the implementation of lawful actions by the Financial Intelligence Agency of Liberia (FIA) against individuals and entities involved in illicit financial activities. These activities pose severe threats to the national, regional, and global financial systems.
The Inter-Ministerial AML/CFT Steering Committee has reinvigorated its support for the FIA to effectively perform its roles, including confiscation of properties derived from proceeds of crimes, implementation of AML/CFT regulations as a deterrent, and oversight within the AML/CFT/PF framework.
The committee aims to enhance inter-agency coordination, advocate for improved budgetary support for the FIA, and ensure accelerated dissemination of relevant information to competent authorities for investigations and prosecutions against money launderers and those aiding financial crimes.
The initial meeting for 2024 was attended by competent authorities, including the Liberia National Police, the National Security Agency, the Liberia Immigration Service, the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission, the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, the Central Bank of Liberia, and ministries such as Labor, Justice, and Commerce and Industry, among others.
