LIBERIA: SUP WARNS OF STUDENT PROTESTS OVER POOR CONDITIONS AT UNIVERSITY OF LIBERIA

MONROVIA – Emmanuel Polay Nyan, Propaganda Chair of the Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP), has issued a stern warning to the University of Liberia administration, the Board of Trustees, and the Government of Liberia, stressing that students will not tolerate the reopening of schools under “broken” conditions.

In a statement released on his official Facebook page on Saturday, September 27, 2025, Nyan said the SUP’s struggle has always been about dignity and improving learning conditions rather than merely resuming classes. He highlighted demands for renovated bathrooms with running water, school buses to serve both campuses, and a reliable semester schedule that will not be disrupted due to unpaid faculty salaries.

“While we have temporarily agreed to trust the Government of Liberia, the illegal Board of Trustees, and the University of Liberia administration to address these demands before school reopens on Wednesday, let it be clear: we will never prioritize the comfort of government-imported bureaucrats over the welfare of the ordinary university student,” Nyan said.

He emphasized that students’ duty is to fight for an education system that is dignified, conducive, and worthy of their sacrifices, and not to placate officials who see education as nothing more than a certificate. Nyan warned that if the authorities fail to meet these commitments, the SUP will resume protests with “even greater force.”

The SUP leader concluded his statement with a show of solidarity, declaring, “Long live Chairman Sylvester S. Kalou Wheeler. Long live SUP.”

The remarks come ahead of the scheduled reopening of the University of Liberia on Wednesday, as students and administrators monitor whether government and university officials will implement the promised reforms.
