MONROVIA – In a move to strengthen accountability and transparency, the Plenary of the House of Representatives has tasked the Public Accounts & Expenditure Committee (PAC) to collaborate with the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to conduct an audit of the House’s operations. The decision was reached on Thursday, February 27, 2025, during the 12th Day Sitting of the 1st Quarter of the 2nd Session, following a communication by Hon. Nyan Flomo, a representative from Nimba County.
Hon. Flomo highlighted the Legislature’s constitutional responsibility to uphold transparency and combat corruption, referencing the 1986 Constitution of Liberia. He pointed to Chapter 2, Article 5(c), which mandates the state to eliminate misuse of government resources, corruption, nepotism, and abuse of power. He also cited House Rule 44.1, which underscores the need for lawmakers to lead by example in the fight against corruption.
The communication from Hon. Flomo came amid a prior, unexplained suspension of a similar audit last year by the GAC. The representative expressed his concerns that further delay in the audit would damage the reputation of the House and could suggest a lack of willingness to confront corruption.
This new mandate is seen as a reaffirmation of the 55th Legislature’s commitment to good governance. It aligns with international standards for institutional accountability and financial transparency. The ongoing efforts signal the House’s determination to uphold integrity in its operations and demonstrate leadership in fighting corruption.
