LIBERIAN HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURS WITH SENATE ON ESTABLISHMENT OF WAR AND ECONOMIC CRIMES COURT

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Under the speakership of Cllr. Fonati Koffa, the House of Representatives has concurred with the Senate’s resolution endorsing the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia. National legislature reports indicate that the decision will be sent to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for swift action. The Senate had previously endorsed the resolution on Tuesday, April 9, 2023, by 28 senators, bringing relief to victims who have been seeking justice.

Between 1989 and 2003, Liberia suffered a devastating civil war characterized by extreme brutality and violence, including massacres, sexual violence, and the use of child soldiers. Thousands of people were killed, and many more were forced to flee their homes during the 14-year war, which ended with the intervention of international peacekeeping forces and the signing of a peace agreement in 2003. The exact number of casualties is still unknown, but it is estimated that up to 250,000 people lost their lives.

The establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia is long overdue and necessary for those who suffered horrific abuses during the war. The endorsement by the National Legislature is a significant step towards achieving true and lasting peace in the country. It is vital for the government to take swift action to ensure that the court is established and that justice is served for victims and their families.
