LIBERIA’S ANTI-CORRUPTION CHIEF RE-ELECTED AS VICE PRESIDENT OF REGIONAL BODY, STRENGTHENING NATION’S ROLE IN WEST AFRICAN GOVERNANCE

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Liberia has once again taken a prominent seat at the regional anti-corruption table as Cllr. Alexandra Kormah Zoe, Executive Chairperson of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), has been re-elected Vice President of the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA).

Her re-election, achieved through a consensus decision, was announced at the close of NACIWA’s 7th Annual General Assembly (AGA) held in Abuja, Nigeria, on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. According to an LACC press release issued by its Public Relations Officer, Deanna Seakor, the decision underscores Cllr. Zoe’s “outstanding leadership, integrity, and commitment to promoting accountability and cross-border collaboration” across the subregion.

The Assembly, which gathered heads of anti-corruption institutions from all ECOWAS member states, ratified new guidelines on Borderless Investigations, Asset Tracing, Recovery, and Management, urging member nations to integrate these frameworks into their domestic systems. The move is expected to enhance coordination in regional efforts to combat corruption and financial crimes that transcend national borders.

In its closing communiqué, NACIWA reaffirmed its commitment to the 2001 ECOWAS Protocol on the Fight Against Corruption, the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), and the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC). It further emphasized the importance of strengthening mutual legal assistance, asset recovery, and intelligence sharing among West African states.

The Abuja Assembly, coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of ECOWAS, also called for deeper collaboration with civil society, youth groups, and the media to broaden public engagement in anti-corruption advocacy. Delegates expressed appreciation to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for officially opening the event. In his address, President Tinubu urged ECOWAS to recognize resource theft, illegal mining, and mineral smuggling as international crimes, warning that such activities continue to undermine regional peace and economic stability.

NACIWA also welcomed new member institutions, including Nigeria’s Code of Conduct Bureau and Cabo Verde’s CPC, expanding its network of anti-corruption agencies.

Cllr. Zoe’s re-election as Vice President of NACIWA not only marks a personal milestone but also represents a growing acknowledgment of Liberia’s leadership in regional anti-corruption efforts. Her continued role is seen as a boost to the country’s credibility and influence in shaping governance and transparency standards across West Africa.
