MONROVIA – Former Vice President of Liberia, Madam Jewel Howard-Taylor, has announced the death of her son, Philip, in a deeply emotional statement that has drawn national attention and widespread sympathy. The former Vice President described the loss as devastating, stating that her heart is shattered and the pain overwhelming following the passing of her only son.
“With deep sorrow, I announce the passing of my beloved son, Philip. My heart is shattered. The pain feels overwhelming and constant,” Madam Howard-Taylor wrote. Her statement reflected the profound grief of a mother grappling with the loss of a child she described as central to her life and purpose.
She said Philip was more than a son, describing him as love, light, and purpose in her life. According to her, his presence shaped her days and gave meaning to her world, underscoring the depth of their bond and the magnitude of the loss suffered by the family.
Madam Howard-Taylor noted that words were insufficient to fully honor who Philip was and what he meant to their family. She appealed for prayers, strength, and grace as she and her family navigate what she described as an intensely painful period of mourning.
The former Vice President also expressed gratitude to those who have reached out with messages of sympathy and support. She said the kindness and compassion shown by friends, supporters, and well-wishers have offered comfort as the family mourns what she called their precious son.
News of Philip’s death broke on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, sending shockwaves across the country. Initial reports indicated that he suffered a respiratory arrest while receiving medical treatment at the GIMS Hospital in the Sophie Community of Paynesville.
Medical sources disclosed that his condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting his immediate transfer to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Sinkor for advanced medical intervention. Despite efforts by medical personnel, he was later pronounced dead.
Philip’s passing marks a tragic end to a life that showed promise beyond the political space associated with his family name. In July 2023, he earned a Master’s degree in Shipping and Port Administration from the Regional Maritime University in Accra, Ghana.
The academic achievement reflected his professional focus and aspirations in the maritime and port management sector, signaling a career path rooted in technical expertise rather than politics.
