LNP ARRESTS FOURTEEN DURING VIOLENT CDC PROTEST IN MONROVIA

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Liberia National Police (LNP) announced the arrest of fourteen individuals in connection with a violent protest that took place on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) headquarters in Congo Town, Monrovia. According to a press release issued by the police, the arrested individuals have been charged with a range of offenses and have been sent to court for legal proceedings.

The suspects, identified as Aaron Soe, Emmanuel D. Sumo, Korpo L. Boakai, Gifty Johnson, Elijah D. Gweh, Christian K. Perry, Itea F. Borbor, Varney D. Wilson, Lawrance G. Bessiah, Samuel Joe, Joseph Z. Benson, Prince Zammie, Derrick Sekeh, Odonnell A. Corbin, and Alieu S. Brima, are facing multiple charges, including Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder, Criminal Facilitation, Criminal Solicitation, Criminal Conspiracy, Physical Obstruction of Government Function, Aggravated Assault, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Criminal Mischief, Riot, Failure to Disperse, Disorderly Conduct, and Obstructing Highway and Other Public Passages.

The LNP stressed its commitment to maintaining peace and order across Liberia, particularly in light of recent events that have seen a rise in public disturbances. “We urge all citizens to refrain from engaging in violent activities and to cooperate with law enforcement authorities,” the LNP’s statement read, emphasizing the need for community cooperation to ensure safety and stability.

The protest, which quickly escalated into violence, saw significant police intervention to restore order and prevent further chaos. The LNP’s swift response has been met with mixed reactions from the public, with some praising the police for their efforts to maintain peace and others questioning the methods used during the arrests.

As the legal proceedings against the fourteen suspects move forward, the LNP has reiterated its dedication to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all citizens. The police have also called for calm and for the public to avoid spreading misinformation that could exacerbate tensions.

This incident marks another chapter in the ongoing political unrest in Liberia, highlighting the challenges faced by law enforcement in balancing the need for security with respect for civil liberties. The LNP has made clear that it will continue to enforce the law while encouraging peaceful dialogue and cooperation among all parties involved.
