LOFA MEDICAL CENTER ADMINISTRATOR ADMITS PERFORMING SURGERY WITHOUT LICENSE IN KOLLIE DEATH TRIAL

MONROVIA – The ongoing trial over the death of Samuel P. Kollie took a shocking turn this week when Sam S. Worlubah, the administrator of Lofa Medical Center, admitted under oath that he is not a licensed medical doctor or surgeon, despite having performed surgery on the deceased patient.

Worlubah, appearing as the first defense witness, initially testified that he conducted a surgical procedure on Kollie, who was admitted to the facility in March 2025 for severe abdominal pain. During cross-examination by the prosecution, however, he confirmed that he only served in an administrative capacity and did not hold a medical license.

“Are you not a medical doctor?” the prosecutor asked.

“Yes,” Worlubah replied, igniting concern over the legality and safety of the medical procedure he performed. Further questioning revealed that the Lofa Medical Center was not authorized to carry out surgeries.

The defense objected, claiming the line of questioning was unconstitutional and self-incriminating. The presiding judge overruled the objection, emphasizing that the prosecution had the right to examine the witness regarding the legality of his actions. “The objection is hereby overruled and the witness should answer the question,” the judge instructed.

This revelation has heightened scrutiny on the case, which involves allegations of medical negligence, unauthorized medical practice, and the unlawful death of a patient. Testimonies presented earlier in court suggested that Kollie may have died after being fed against medical advice and before undergoing a surgical procedure that the facility was not licensed to perform.

Following the incident, the Liberia Medical and Dental Council shut down the Lofa Medical Center and launched an investigation into the facility’s operations. Public health advocates are now urging a comprehensive audit of private health clinics across Liberia to ensure compliance with medical standards and protect patient safety.

Court proceedings are set to continue this week, as prosecutors seek accountability for what they describe as “a gross violation of public health and patient safety,” with potential implications for medical regulations nationwide.
