LIBERIA – The ruling Unity Party government, led by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, is facing significant criticism for its performance during its first six months in office. Among the critics is Dr. Clarence Moniba, a former presidential contender and leader of the Liberia National Union, who has strongly condemned the administration’s budgetary priorities.
In a recent statement, Dr. Moniba did not hold back in his critique of the Boakai-Koung administration, highlighting severe misallocations of funds and calling for urgent reforms to address the issues plaguing Liberia. Moniba emphasized the stark contrast between the high salaries of lawmakers and the low wages of civil servants, educators, and healthcare providers. He criticized the government’s tendency towards self-serving expenditures at the expense of critical sectors such as agriculture, education, and healthcare.
Moniba pointed out the troubling budget disparities, noting that only $5 million was allocated for agriculture, compared to $40 million for the legislature. He warned of severe consequences if these discrepancies continue. “As long as this wage gap persists, we’ll see more individuals pleading for sustenance within the halls of government buildings, instead of contributing to the growth of our farms, industries, and classrooms,” Moniba asserted.
Beyond the budgetary issues, Moniba called on the administration to take decisive action in implementing the recently enacted war and economic crimes executive order. He urged amendments to laws that currently protect war criminals and corrupt officials from accountability, stressing that true progress relies on transparency and justice.
Moniba also highlighted the urgent need for infrastructural improvements. He underscored the importance of better roads, consistent electricity supply, and enhanced access to financial services for ordinary Liberians. “We must alter their circumstances by setting ambitious targets, such as distributing one million individualized solar kits for rural areas,” he declared, emphasizing the significance of improved energy access.
In his closing remarks, Moniba issued a stark ultimatum to the administration: “Excuses hold no weight – what matters are tangible outcomes.” His statement served as a clarion call for the Boakai-Koung administration to deliver substantive results rather than engage in political posturing.
Moniba’s critique adds to the mounting pressure on President Boakai’s government to address the country’s pressing issues and enact meaningful reforms for the betterment of Liberia.
