MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Montserrado County Legislative Caucus has called for immediate accountability regarding the Social Development Funds (SDF) for the 2023/2024 fiscal year, following discrepancies over disbursements. A press statement issued on Monday, February 22, 2025, clarified that Montserrado County has yet to receive its portion of the funds, contrary to President Joseph Nyumah Boakai’s claim during his recent State of the Nation Address that all counties had been paid.
The Caucus expressed deep concern over the misinformation and the impact it has had on the relationship between lawmakers and their constituencies. According to the statement, the members of the Caucus have not received any Social Development Funds, which are intended for various developmental projects within the county. This has led to confusion, with the Caucus now facing accountability pressure from constituents.
The Legislative Caucus also highlighted a troubling revelation from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, which initially confirmed a $500,000 allocation for Montserrado County from Firestone, only to later disclose that the funds had been redirected elsewhere.
In light of these developments, the Caucus has demanded that the Ministry of Finance provide a detailed breakdown of all Social Development Funds allocated to Montserrado County for 2023 and 2024. Additionally, they have called for the invitation of all concessionaires responsible for providing these funds to a public hearing. They further proposed that the General Auditing Commission (GAC) conduct a comprehensive audit into the funds’ disbursement and management.
The Caucus is also preparing to present a petition on behalf of their constituents demanding the immediate release of the overdue funds. As part of their efforts, they are seeking a full financial statement of their account for the period in question from the relevant banking authorities.
The Montserrado County Legislative Caucus emphasized that they would not tolerate corruption or mismanagement of funds meant for the development of their people. They issued a 48-hour ultimatum to those responsible for the disbursement, threatening to take legal and public action if the funds are not released within the stipulated time frame. The Caucus is determined to ensure that the people of Montserrado County receive the Social Development Funds they are rightfully owed.
