MULBAH MORLU TURNS HIMSELF IN AS POLICE PROBE VIOLENCE DURING DECEMBER 17 PROTEST

MONROVIA – Mulbah K. Morlu, lead campaigner of the December 17 “Lead or Leave” protest, on Thursday, December 18, 2025, voluntarily presented himself at the headquarters of the Liberia National Police (LNP) in Monrovia to assist with an ongoing investigation into violence that erupted during the protest.

Morlu’s surrender follows a police statement identifying him as a person of interest, alongside Alvin Wesseh and Archie Pompom, in connection with incidents that reportedly disrupted the protest and threatened public safety. The LNP said the investigation centers on allegations of incitement and acts that undermined the peaceful character of the demonstration.

Upon his arrival at police headquarters, Morlu was taken in for questioning and is currently undergoing investigation. Police sources confirmed that as of the time of his appearance, the two other named persons of interest had not reported to the authorities.

When asked about the whereabouts of Archie Pompom, Morlu indicated that Pompom is not a member of STAND, the group associated with organizing the protest. Alvin Wesseh, meanwhile, has yet to respond to the police request to appear for questioning.

The Liberia National Police, in a statement issued after the protest, reaffirmed its recognition of the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. The police emphasized their commitment to facilitating lawful protests in ways that safeguard democratic freedoms while ensuring public safety.

However, the LNP strongly condemned what it described as acts of violence, intimidation, and destruction of property that occurred during the December 17 protest. According to the police, these actions endangered lives and property and diverted the event from its stated peaceful purpose.

Police authorities stressed that violence has no place in democratic engagement and warned that such conduct will not be tolerated under any circumstances. They noted that maintaining public order is essential to protecting the rights of all citizens.

As part of what the LNP described as a professional, evidence-based, and impartial process, the three individuals were formally named as persons of interest and requested to report to the Central Police Headquarters to assist with the investigation.

The police cautioned that failure by any of the named individuals to comply with the lawful request would compel the LNP to exercise its statutory authority to effect arrests, consistent with due process and the laws of the Republic of Liberia.

Reassuring the public, the Liberia National Police said the matter is being handled with restraint, proportionality, and respect for human rights, in line with its broader commitment to accountability, transparency, and community trust.

The LNP also called on citizens, protest organizers, and all stakeholders to engage peacefully and responsibly, particularly during the festive season, as police work to ensure a safe, secure, and stable environment across the country.
