LIBERIA – The National Elections Commission (NEC) announced the winners of the senatorial and representative by-elections held in Nimba County and Grand Gedeh County simultaneously. Sokan Sr. Jeremiah Garwo, an independent candidate, was declared the winner of the Representative by-election in district #1, Grand Gedeh County, receiving the highest number of votes (3,168), constituting 30.74 percent of valid votes, according to NEC Head of Commissioners Davidetta Brown Lassanah. Additionally, Tuayen Jr., Nyan D. of the Unity Party, was declared the winner of the 23 April 2024 senatorial by-election in Nimba County, defeating Representative Samuel Kogar and two other senatorial candidates with 67,138 final votes, constituting 59.27 percent of valid votes.
Representative-elect Sokan’s victory was confirmed on April 25, 2024, when the commission announced the final results of all 46 polling places, constituting 100 percent completion of collated results of the representative by-election of his district.
The NEC extended appreciation to the Government of Liberia (GOL) for funding the elections and applauded the Ministry of Justice and Joint Security for maintaining peace during the by-elections. The commission also thanked its temporary staff, employees, management teams, owners of properties used for the by-elections, international partners, political parties, and candidates.
The by-elections were held due to then-Senator Jeremiah Kpan Koon’s ascendance to the Vice Presidency in the 2023 presidential and legislative elections, creating a vacancy in Nimba County, and the passing of Representative-elect Erol Madison Gwion upon his victory in Grand Gedeh County.
