MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Finance and Development Planning Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan has underscored the importance of a strong partnership between the government and the private sector to ensure steady economic growth. Speaking during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting at the Freeport of Monrovia on Tuesday, he engaged key business leaders on ways to resolve trade bottlenecks and improve revenue collection.
Minister Ngafuan emphasized that Liberia’s fiscal strength depends largely on a thriving business sector, which plays a major role in generating domestic revenue. He stressed that creating an environment where businesses can operate smoothly is essential to achieving the government’s financial goals. He assured the business community that the administration remains committed to addressing their concerns through continuous dialogue and collaboration.
During the discussions, Minister Ngafuan reiterated that the Freeport of Monrovia serves as a crucial hub for economic activities and must function efficiently to support national development. He pointed out that persistent challenges at the port have affected trade, making it necessary to introduce reforms that will streamline operations and facilitate commerce. He called for collective action to remove obstacles that hinder business growth.
Commerce and Industry Minister Marthaline Dagoseh, who also participated in the meeting, highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent trade system. She noted that previous engagements with major business associations had revealed concerns over tariff structures at the port. She expressed optimism that the latest discussions would lead to practical solutions that support both government revenue targets and private sector expansion.
National Port Authority (NPA) Managing Director Sekou Dukuly stressed the significance of maintaining open communication between port authorities and businesses. He stated that while the NPA has designed a trade facilitation plan to improve efficiency, regular consultations with key stakeholders are crucial for resolving unforeseen challenges. He reassured the business community that the government is working toward an improved trade environment.
Business representatives at the meeting raised concerns over customs fees, regulatory processes, and other trade-related issues that they say continue to pose difficulties. They urged the government to implement policies that will make commerce more predictable and transparent.
