The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), has urged the National Assembly (NASS), to operate a joint committee on Public Accounts as obtainable in the Liberian National Parliament.
Director–General of NILDS, Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, made the appeal in Abuja Wednesday while declaring open 10 – day capacity building programme for Staff of the Liberian National Parliament.
He pointedly stated that for expeditious consideration of audit report received from office of Auditor General of the Federation on yearly basis, making the committee a joint one, will serve the purpose.
“It is worth congratulating the Liberian Parliament for adopting good practices with respect to the operations of Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
“For instance, despite being a bicameral legislature, Liberia has a Joint Public Accounts Committee, which makes for a faster, more efficient, and cost-effective way of considering audit reports.
“I encourage you to sustain this practice and call on the Nigerian National Assembly to adopt a similar model to facilitate speedier consideration and resolution of audit reports and queries,” he said.
The Liberian Ambassador to Nigeria, Professor Alhassan Konte, said Liberian has a lot to learn from Nigeria in the area of legislative processes.
