MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Montserrado County District #10 Representative Yekeh Kolubah, a strong supporter of embattled Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and a vocal critic of President Joseph Boakai’s administration, has made serious allegations about a bribery attempt involving key figures in the ongoing leadership conflict within the House of Representatives.
According to a post shared on Hon. Yekeh Y. Kolubah TV’s Facebook page on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Kolubah claimed that Sekou Hussein Dukuly, Managing Director of the National Port Authority (NPA), transported $900,000 to Bella Casa Hotel in an attempt to influence the Supreme Court’s upcoming ruling in favor of the legislative majority bloc. Kolubah alleged that the money was handed over to Representatives Prince Moye, James Biney, and Emmanuel Nuquay, following instructions from Vice President Jeremiah Koung.
The Supreme Court is set to rule on the dispute between Speaker Koffa and the majority bloc, which is represented by legal counsels Cllr. Arthur Johnson and Cllr. Varney Sherman. The conflict centers on allegations from the majority bloc accusing Speaker Koffa of corruption, undermining legislative committee functions, and creating conflicts of interest. Speaker Koffa has denied these charges and has called on his critics to bring formal resolutions to address their concerns in legislative sessions.
In court, Cllr. Johnson argued that the majority bloc’s actions were unconstitutional, citing Articles 2 and 33 of the Liberian Constitution and calling for their decisions to be nullified. In contrast, Cllr. Sherman defended the bloc, asserting that their actions were constitutionally sound and urging the Court not to interfere in what he described as a political matter. Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Yuoh emphasized the importance of respecting constitutional principles while upholding the legislature’s independence. The Court has reserved its ruling and temporarily suspended the case.
In an intense escalation of the political crisis, Kolubah has vowed to lead a “Step Down Campaign” against President Boakai if the Supreme Court rules against Speaker Koffa. Kolubah, once a strong supporter of Boakai, stated he would mobilize a movement calling for the President’s resignation if the Court delivers a ruling that negatively impacts Koffa’s position.
“If the Supreme Court rules against the Speaker, setting a dangerous precedent, I will spearhead a forceful campaign to call for Boakai’s removal from office,” Kolubah warned during a press briefing on December 3, 2024, at the Capitol Building. He expressed concerns that such a ruling could destabilize both the legislature and the nation.
Kolubah also rejected rumors circulating on social media that suggested a ruling in favor of the majority bloc, calling these claims attempts to undermine public confidence in the judiciary. “We believe in the Court system and trust that it will not be manipulated,” he added.
Despite the ongoing political commotion, Speaker Koffa has remained firm in his decision not to resign and has expressed confidence in the Supreme Court to resolve the crisis. He has urged unity within the House of Representatives and reiterated his commitment to respecting the Court’s final decision.
Meanwhile, in response to Rep. Kolubah’s allegation, the Managing Director of the National Port Authority (NPA), Sekou Dukuly, dismissed the claims as false and baseless propaganda.
In a statement on his Facebook page, MD Dukuly wrote, “This is not only a lie but the cheapest form of propaganda that cannot withstand any reasonable scrutiny.”
