NPHIL CONFIRMS NEGATIVE EBOLA AND OTHER VIRAL HEMORRHAGIC FEVER TESTS IN LIBERIA

CHARLESVILLE, LIBERIA – The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has confirmed that a second round of extensive molecular testing on suspected viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) specimens has returned negative results for all Ebola subtypes, Marburg virus, and other related pathogens. The announcement was made in a press release on Friday, September 12, 2025.

According to the release, the tests conducted on specimens initially flagged by the Ministry of Health showed negative results for Ebola Zaire, Ebola Sudan, Ebola Bundibugyo, Ebola Taï, and Ebola Reston. In addition, tests for Marburg virus, Lassa fever, and other viral hemorrhagic fevers were also negative. NPHIL emphasized that these viruses, which include members of the Arenaviruses, Bunyaviruses, Filoviruses, and Flaviviruses families, are zoonotic in nature, originating in animals or insects and potentially causing life-threatening illnesses in humans. Symptoms often include fever, body aches, and in some cases, bleeding.

NPHIL Director General Dougbeh Chris Nyany stated that the National Reference Laboratory has maintained routine epidemiological surveillance and diagnostic testing for viral hemorrhagic fevers since the 2014 Ebola epidemic. “Once again, the public is hereby informed that the NPHIL safely rules out Ebola or Marburg infection in Liberia as of the 12th September 2025 at 23:00 Hrs GMT molecular testing results,” the press release said.

The institute also highlighted its continued efforts to strengthen cross-border surveillance with Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, and Guinea, and its commitment to Liberia’s One-Health-Platform to monitor and control emerging infectious diseases.

NPHIL urged the public and scientific community to remain calm and continue following standard public health measures, stressing that the surveillance system remains active to safeguard both the country and the wider region. The agency also encouraged verification of any information directly through NPHIL, which is currently responding to concurrent outbreaks of Mpox, Lassa fever, and Measles. Citizens with suspected cases are urged to contact the NPHIL hotline at #4455.

The press release, electronically signed and encoded for verification, stresses NPHIL’s vigilance and commitment to preventing and controlling public health threats in Liberia.
