POLICE INVESTIGATE CONFRONTATION WITH BBC CORRESPONDENT

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – A confrontation between a Liberia National Police (LNP) officer and BBC Correspondent Moses Garzeawu at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville has drawn significant public attention after a video of the incident surfaced online. The footage, now viral on social media, has triggered widespread discussions about press freedom and police conduct.

In a press release signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Cecelia G. Clarke, the LNP acknowledged the incident and announced that an investigation has been launched to uncover the circumstances surrounding the altercation. The police urged the public to remain calm and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions.

“The Liberia National Police is committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation into the matter. We encourage all parties to exercise patience while the facts are being established,” the statement read.

The LNP reiterated its dedication to upholding press freedom and ensuring accountability for those involved. However, no specific details about the cause of the confrontation or the identities of the officer have been disclosed.

The video, which depicts a heated exchange between Garzeawu and the police officer, has raised concerns about the safety and rights of journalists operating in Liberia. Citizens and advocacy groups have since called for the police to handle the investigation transparently and ensure that any misconduct is addressed appropriately.
