MONROVIA – Authorities in Monrovia have launched an investigation into the sudden and mysterious death of Tonia Jackson, the wife of Liberian economist Sam Jackson, following her passing on Friday, March 13, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Hospital.
The Liberia National Police (LNP) confirmed that it has begun probing the circumstances surrounding Mrs. Jackson’s death, a case that has already generated intense public attention after troubling developments surfaced on social media.
According to reports, police investigators moved to Mr. Jackson’s residence shortly after the incident to conduct what authorities described as a forensic investigation. The action was intended to gather evidence that could help determine the events leading to the young woman’s death.
However, the police action was strongly criticized by Jackson, who argued that investigators did not inform him before arriving at his residence to conduct the search. Speaking to reporters, he said he was unaware that police were planning to visit his home as part of the investigation.
Jackson further claimed that police officers had gone to view his wife’s body without first notifying him, a development he said left him deeply troubled during an already painful moment for his family.
Meanwhile, new revelations circulating on social media have intensified public concern over the case. Photos allegedly sent by the late Tonia Jackson to a close friend days before her death have surfaced online.
According to information shared by individuals familiar with the posts, the images reportedly show bruises on parts of her body. The exact cause of those injuries remains unknown, and authorities have not confirmed whether the photos are connected to the circumstances surrounding her death.
The emergence of the images has prompted many Liberians to demand a thorough and transparent investigation into what led to the sudden death of the young woman, who was believed to be in her twenties or early thirties. Reports also suggest that Tonia Jackson was a South African expatriate living in Liberia.
As public debate grows, social and women’s rights advocate Grace R. Guar has publicly defended the police decision to investigate the matter.
In a statement posted on her official Facebook page, Guar stressed that law enforcement has both the legal authority and moral responsibility to investigate any death that raises suspicion.
“The police have the unequivocal right and responsibility to investigate any death when there are suspicions or concerns surrounding it, regardless of whether the death occurred minutes or hours ago,” she wrote.
She further emphasized that grief should not obstruct justice, adding that mourning does not exempt anyone from accountability when questions arise about the circumstances surrounding a death.
Guar also expressed strong support for Gregory Coleman, Inspector General of the Liberia National Police, praising his leadership and commitment to ensuring that the law is upheld in sensitive cases.
Before announcing his wife’s passing, Sam Jackson had shared a series of emotional updates on his Facebook page as her condition worsened at the hospital.
In his first post, Jackson wrote, “My wife fell out. Semi conscious at Catholic Hospital. Prayers please!!!”
He later expressed frustration over the medical situation, writing, “Aye my country. Two places. Ambulance is down in the garage. Only God can help this woman. I’m just calm. God. We need a miracle. Can’t fly her out until she’s stable.”
In another update, he thanked supporters for their prayers while noting that the situation remained critical. “My greatest appreciation to all of the well wishers. We are not out of danger yet. We need your prayers. God bless and keep us all!” he stated.
Hours later, Jackson confirmed the tragic news in a final post that read: “My wife didn’t make it. I just said my final goodbye. God knows.”
As the investigation continues, the Liberia National Police say further conclusions will depend on the outcome of forensic examinations and other investigative procedures aimed at determining the exact cause of death. Authorities have urged the public to allow the investigation to proceed without speculation while they work to establish the facts surrounding the tragic incident.
