PRES. BOAKAI’S LEADERSHIP UNDER SCRUTINY AMID CENTRAL BANK OF LIBERIA CORRUPTION SCANDAL

Date:

The recent revelations of large-scale looting at the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) have cast a dark shadow over the administration of President Joseph Boakai. Elected on a promise to eradicate corruption, Boakai now faces a critical test of his leadership and commitment to transparency. His silence and inaction in the face of these serious allegations threaten not only his credibility but also the trust of the Liberian people who placed their faith in his vision for a corruption-free government.

Reports indicate that a network of shell companies was used to siphon millions from government accounts at the CBL during the tenure of Amara Konneh as Finance Minister. Konneh, now a senator for Gbarpolu County and a prominent figure in the ruling party, is central to these allegations. The involvement of such a high-ranking official raises serious questions about accountability and justice within Boakai’s government.

President Boakai’s failure to address these accusations directly undermines the very foundation of his presidency. It sends a message that those in power can act with impunity, eroding public confidence in the government’s ability to uphold the rule of law. The Liberian Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) and the Asset Recovery Team, both established to combat corruption, have thus far been conspicuously inactive, further compounding public disillusionment.

The President’s inaction can be perceived as tacitly condoning Konneh’s alleged actions, suggesting that political alliances and personal loyalties take precedence over justice and integrity. This perception is damaging not only to Boakai’s reputation but to the entire administration, casting doubt on its commitment to the principles on which it was elected.

Liberia stands at a crossroads. The people demand and deserve a government that is transparent, accountable, and dedicated to rooting out corruption at all levels. President Boakai must take immediate and decisive action to investigate the CBL looting scandal. This includes empowering the LACC and the Asset Recovery Team to conduct thorough and impartial investigations, holding all those involved accountable, regardless of their political connections or status.

Failing to do so will signal a profound weakness in Boakai’s leadership and an inability to live up to the anti-corruption mantra that brought him to power. It will also be construed as providing cover for Amara Konneh, further entrenching the culture of impunity that has plagued Liberia for too long.

President Boakai, the time for action is now. The Liberian people are watching, and history will judge your response to this critical issue. Show the nation and the world that you are committed to justice, transparency, and the rule of law. Demonstrate that your administration will not tolerate corruption, regardless of where it originates. Only then can you restore faith in your leadership and in the future of Liberia.
