MONROVIA, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2024 – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has accepted the resignation of Mr. Amin Modad, former Minister of Commerce and Industry, following controversy over the procurement of a luxury vehicle.
In a press release issued on Thursday, October 10, 2024, Presidential Press Secretary Madam Kula Bonah Nyei Fofana confirmed that Mr. Modad stepped down after concerns were raised about the purchase of a vehicle that significantly exceeded the government’s standard cost for ministerial transportation.
President Boakai acknowledged Mr. Modad’s contributions to the Ministry of Commerce but noted that the decision to make such an extravagant purchase displayed poor judgment and a lack of sensitivity to Liberia’s current economic challenges. He added that the timing of the purchase was especially inappropriate given the economic hardships many Liberians are facing.
The President also directed that the vehicle in question be transferred to the General Services Agency (GSA) for official use in accommodating VIP guests, underscoring the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible resource management.
In the interim, President Boakai has appointed Deputy Minister for Administration, Madam Scholastica Tanneh Nyenkan-Nimely, to serve as Acting Minister until a permanent replacement is announced.
