MONROVIA – In a recent statement, Dr. Joshua Tom Turner, a prominent figure in Liberian politics and leader of the New Liberia Party (NLP), expressed concern about President Boakai’s ability to maintain the trust of the majority who voted him into power. Dr. Turner criticized the President for his recent pronouncements and actions, stating that they demonstrated a lack of understanding of the challenges facing the country.
Dr. Turner highlighted the difference between political party politickings and governing, emphasizing that as the President, Boakai needs to prioritize the needs of the nation over political considerations. He specifically mentioned President Boakai’s decision to make appointments into tenured positions and to order an audit of the National Security Agency (NSA) as missteps within the first two months of his presidency.
Furthermore, Dr. Turner commented on President Boakai’s 100 Days Deliverables, expressing doubt about the feasibility of some of the promises made during Boakai’s first State of the Nation Address. In particular, Dr. Turner pointed out the challenges in road rehabilitation and construction, where the President promised a “NO CAR STUCK IN THE MUD” deliverable. Dr. Turner believes that President Boakai was overly ambitious in making such promises without fully understanding the competing national priorities.
It is worth noting that President Boakai had previously directed the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to conduct a comprehensive audit of three key government institutions: the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), National Security Agency (NSA), and Executive Protection Service (EPS). However, following opposition and concerns about auditing the sensitive operations of the NSA, the President decided to decommission the NSA’s audit.
Dr. Turner believes that President Boakai’s decision-making is influenced by those around him and calls for him to listen to and respect different views, regardless of political affiliations. He also expressed disappointment with the slow pace of appointing officials to the Executive Branch of government, particularly the county superintendents who are responsible for administering the affairs of the various counties.
In conclusion, Dr. Joshua Tom Turner, leader of the NLP, has voiced his concerns about President Boakai’s ability to fulfill his promises and effectively govern the country. He urges the President to prioritize the needs of the nation and take advice from a diverse range of sources to ensure the best outcomes for Liberia.
