PRESIDENT JOSEPH BOAKAI WARNS NEWLY COMMISSIONED OFFICIALS THAT PUBLIC OFFICE IS NOT A REWARD

EXECUTIVE MANSION, MONROVIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has issued a stern charge to newly commissioned government officials, warning that public office is not a reward but a serious responsibility that demands integrity, discipline, and measurable results. Speaking at the Executive Mansion on January 20, 2026, President Boakai emphasized that the authority entrusted to officials belongs to the Liberian people and must be exercised in their interest at all times.

Addressing members of the judiciary, security sector, regulatory agencies, and public institutions, President Boakai said the commissioning ceremony marked more than a constitutional formality. “Today, we are not simply gathering to perform a constitutional formality,” he said. “We are here to place trust, responsibility, and national expectation in the hands of fellow Liberians who have been called to serve.”

The President reminded the officials that their selection reflects national confidence in their competence and character, but warned that such confidence must be earned daily. He stressed that conduct, decision-making, and tangible outcomes would be the true measure of their service, not titles or positions.

Highlighting the central role of institutions in sustaining democracy, President Boakai underscored the importance of impartial justice and lawful governance. He noted that those joining the judiciary carry a sacred duty to ensure fairness, declaring that “justice must not bend to influence, convenience, or fear,” and that public confidence depends entirely on the independence and integrity of the courts.

Turning to officials in immigration, national security, and regulatory bodies, President Boakai cautioned against abuse of authority. He said power exercised without fairness quickly erodes public trust and warned that professionalism and respect for the law must guide every action taken in the name of the state.

On the management of public institutions and national resources, the President emphasized stewardship as the true test of leadership. He stated that Liberia’s land, minerals, energy, and public assets must be managed transparently and wisely for both present and future generations, making clear that mismanagement would betray the public trust.

President Boakai linked the officials’ responsibilities to his Administration’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, describing it as a practical roadmap rather than a symbolic policy document. He told the officials that each of them now carries part of that national agenda and that their daily decisions must align with its goals of improving livelihoods and restoring confidence in government.

He further warned that Liberians are closely watching the performance of their leaders. “Our people are patient, but they are also discerning,” President Boakai said, stressing that leadership is judged by service delivered, not speeches made. He repeatedly emphasized that performance, accountability, and results matter.

Calling for unity within government, President Boakai urged officials to work collaboratively across institutions while respecting constitutional boundaries. He warned against personal ambition and institutional rivalry, noting that government functions best when it operates as one cohesive system focused on the national interest.

In closing, President Boakai reminded the officials that their oath of office is a covenant with the Constitution and the people of Liberia. He urged them to carry their responsibilities with humility and honor, declaring, “The measure of leadership is service rendered, not privilege enjoyed,” as he called on them to serve honestly, courageously, and with compassion for the nation.
