PRESIDENTIAL PRESS SECRETARY COMMENDS PUL, REAFFIRMS GOVERNMENT’S COMMITMENT TO PRESS FREEDOM

MONROVIA – Presidential Press Secretary Atty. Kula Bonah Nyei Fofana has lauded the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) for its resilience and contribution to democracy as the Union officially opened its new office on Warner Avenue, 9th Street, Sinkor, on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

Delivering remarks on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Madam Fofana described the new facility as more than just an office space, but a milestone in Liberia’s democratic journey. She noted that the occasion signified “the strengthening of an institution that has, for decades, stood as a custodian of truth, accountability, and the principles of democracy.”

“The dedication of this new space is not merely the opening of an office building. It represents the strengthening of an institution that has, for decades, stood as a custodian of truth, accountability, and the principles of democracy,” Madam Fofana emphasized.

She praised Liberian journalists for their critical role in informing the public, holding leaders accountable, and amplifying the voices of the marginalized, even in difficult times. According to her, “The media is, and has always been, an indispensable pillar of Liberia’s socio-economic and political journey. Through moments of triumph and periods of turbulence, Liberian journalists have borne the responsibility of informing the public, holding power to account, amplifying the voices of the marginalized, and shaping national dialogue.”

While affirming President Boakai’s commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment for the press, Madam Fofana stressed the importance of balancing freedom with responsibility. “Freedom of the press must be balanced with ethical responsibility, truth-telling, and professional conduct,” she said.

She further commended the PUL’s efforts in capacity building, ethical advocacy, and defending the rights of journalists, noting that the new office would serve as a hub for these crucial functions. “The new office we inaugurate today will serve as a hub for these essential functions, a place where knowledge, advocacy, and solidarity among journalists will flourish,” she remarked.

Madam Fofana concluded by reaffirming the government’s partnership with the media in advancing democratic governance. “On behalf of the President and the Government of Liberia, I congratulate the Press Union of Liberia on this historic achievement and reaffirm our collective commitment to protecting and advancing the values of press freedom, free speech, and democratic governance,” she stated.

The event was attended by members of the media, civil society representatives, and other distinguished guests.
