MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Rep. Josiah Marvin Cole of District #3 in Bong County has formally resigned from the National Patriotic Party (NPP), citing a series of disagreements with the party’s leadership. In a letter dated Thursday, January 23, 2025, addressed to Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor, the former Vice President and Standard Bearer of the NPP, Rep. Cole explained that his resignation was driven by his suspension from the party and what he deemed a failure to follow the party’s by-laws and constitution.
Rep. Cole’s resignation follows the endorsement of his suspension by NPP National Chairman Hon. George Sylvester Mulbah and other executive members of the party. The lawmaker contended that the endorsement was done without giving him a fair opportunity to be heard, as is required by the party’s governing rules. He also emphasized that his suspension was both “undemocratic” and “unconstitutional,” with a violation of the rules of the House of Representatives.
In his letter, Rep. Cole expressed gratitude for the support he received from the NPP since joining the party in 1997, acknowledging the opportunity to contest two legislative terms and secure victories. However, he stressed that the leadership under Chairman Mulbah no longer upheld the party’s commitment to defending the Constitution and protecting the interests of the people. After consulting with family, friends, political allies, and religious leaders, Rep. Cole made the decision to leave the NPP, affirming that “the law is the law.”
His resignation comes at a time of heightened political tension, as Rep. Cole was also named among the persons of interest in the ongoing investigation into the arson at the Capitol Building by the Liberia National Police (LNP). Despite these challenges, he closed his resignation letter with blessings for the NPP, the people of District #3, and Liberia at large.
