REPRESENTATIVE BILITY REDUCES SALARY BY 50%, CALLS ON LAWMAKERS TO FOLLOW SUIT

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Representative Musa Hassan Bility of District #7, Nimba County, has announced a voluntary 50% reduction in his salary and benefits, urging his colleagues in the 55th Legislature to do the same in response to the suspension of U.S. assistance through USAID.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Bility warned that the loss of USAID support poses a serious threat to Liberia’s economy, impacting schools, hospitals, and national security. He stressed the need for decisive action to mitigate the effects of the funding cut, calling on leaders to demonstrate sacrifice and commitment to their constituents.

Bility revealed that his forfeited salary and benefits would be allocated to the Saclepea Comprehensive Health Center in Nimba County. The hospital’s 2025 budget was slashed from $120,000 to $75,000, leaving it unable to fund critical projects, including the purchase of a pickup truck for emergency response. In consultation with the hospital’s management, Bility committed his financial contribution to procuring the vehicle, ensuring doctors and nurses can reach patients in need.

He emphasized that his decision was not about wealth but leadership, stating that public officials must take proactive steps to cushion the economic blow caused by the loss of U.S. aid. He praised President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for implementing similar cost-cutting measures within the Executive Branch and challenged all lawmakers, the Chief Justice, and members of the Judiciary to follow suit.

Bility urged leaders to abandon self-interest and redirect resources toward the well-being of the people, stressing that this was a moment for authentic leadership. He called for national unity in facing the crisis, concluding that those entrusted with power must lead by example.
