RULE OF LAW CAUCUS REJECTS SUSPENSION OF YEKEH KOLUBAH

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Rule of Law Caucus in Liberia’s House of Representatives has strongly condemned the recent suspension of Representative Yekeh Kolubah, calling it an illegal and unconstitutional move. The Caucus decried the decision made by the so-called majority in the House, stating that the suspension contradicts a Supreme Court ruling and violates established parliamentary procedures.

The caucus highlighted that the suspension lacked any legal basis, as the term “session day” cited in the decision is not recognized in the House’s official rules. This, the caucus argued, sets a dangerous precedent that undermines democratic governance in Liberia.

Furthermore, the caucus pointed out that the suspension was enacted without meeting the constitutional requirements for quorum. The meeting only had 32 members present, whereas the rules dictate that at least 49 members must be present and vote in favor of such a decision for it to be legally valid. As such, the caucus maintains that the suspension is null and void.

The Rule of Law Caucus has called on the government to take immediate action against the unconstitutional suspension and to hold those responsible accountable. They warned that such disregard for the law could further destabilize the country and erode public trust in Liberia’s democratic institutions.

The caucus also made a stern statement directed at the Minister of Finance, urging that the salaries and benefits of duly elected representatives should not be withheld based on the actions of what they describe as an illegitimate body. They emphasized that any attempt to justify withholding Kolubah’s salary would be a violation of the law and an endorsement of political impunity.

In the wake of the suspension, Representative Kolubah has expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision, referring to the actions of the Majority Bloc as “so so jokers” in a social media post. He indicated that he intends to pursue legal action to challenge the suspension, underscoring his resolve to seek redress through the courts.

The Rule of Law Caucus reiterated its commitment to a peaceful and lawful resolution of the crisis within the House of Representatives, calling on civil society organizations, democratic forces, and the people of Liberia to join in defending the rule of law. They stressed that the nation cannot afford to slide into lawlessness, especially when the actions of a few lawmakers threaten the stability and progress of Liberia.
