MONROVIA – The Wednesday’s Annual Academic Recognition and Honoring Program of the Amos C Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Liberia held at the Executive Lounge in Fendall was colourful and uniquely observed.
The ceremony was uniquely organised and colorful, its presented a positive image of the nation’s flagship institution of higher learning.
The pronouncement was made on Wednesday by the Foemer First Lady of Liberia and widow of Dr. Amos Claudius Sawyer, Mrs. Thelma E. Duncan Sawyer at Wednesday’s Annual Academic Recognition and Honoring program organized by the ACS College.
The program was colourful and uniquely conducted with authorities of UL and other high profile attending. They include Prof. Dr. Agnes Reeves-Taylor, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Mrs. Benetta Joko Tarr, Vice President for Administration; Prof. Dr. Morris Cooper,.Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs; Liberia Culture Ambassador, Mr. Kerkula Kamara; Mrs. Nyemah Dumbar, Official, UL Board of Trustees and Mr. James David, Official of NASSCORP. Others include Chairpersons, Deans, Faculty members, staffs, 104th Class leadership from UL, Well-wishers and graduates who participated in the College’s Thesis defense exercise.
During the program, all graduates who participated in the ACS College’s Thesis held at the Thelma E Duncan Sawyer Faculty Lounge in Fendall were presented official “Certificate of Attestation” signed by the Dean.
Off the 177 graduates, only 72 graduates defended their thesis, Capstone and Student Project, while the rest escaped from the academics exercise. As policies of the Dean, those graduates who refused to defend their research works will not receive any letter of recommendation from the Dean’s office as panelty for escaping the academic exercise.
Meanwhile, ACS College is grateful to the Boars of Trustees of the Dr. Amos C. Sawyer Educational Foundation, especially Mrs. Thelma E Duncan Sawyer for the kind gesture towards Beatric Snyder and the College in particular, University of Liberia in general.
Meanwhile, during the Wednesday’s program, the ACS College bestowed honors and awards on several faculty members, graduates, students, staff and institutions and personalities for their outstanding academic performance, diligent services, leadership and support towards the growth and development of the College.
According to the Dean of the SCS College, Associate Prof. Dr. Josephus Moses Gba-hinnih Gray, the honorees remarkably achievements worth appreciation. He said honorees standout amount the best in the college.
The Most Distinguished Professor Award was given to Prof. Dr. D. Elliott Wreh-Wilson of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies; the Most Distinguished Faculty award was presented to Mr. Alfred K. Thomas of the Department of English and Language Studies, the Most Outstanding Chairperson Award was received by Assistant Prof. Dr. Kula M. Thompson-Williams, Chairperson, Department of English and Language Studies while the Department of English and LanguageStudies won the OutstandingDepartment of the Year Award.
The Social Work Student Association won the Best Association Award, while Instructors Roosevelt Tule and Benedict Togba won the Most Determined Faculty Award. Another Instructor at the Department of Chjnese Language and Culture, Mr. Li Pang was honored as Quality Teaching and Research while Mr. Peter S. Dolo was honored for his Scholastic peer-reviewed book about Liberia.
Other awards include the Prestigious Distinguished Graduate award which was given to the Valedictorian of the Class, Mr. Amadou L.Sayon, from the Social Work Unit. The “Most Determined Graduate” award was given to Miss. Beatrice Snyder, a BA graduate in English from the Department of English and Language Studies. Her honored brought tears to several faculty, administrators, platform guests, students and faculty members as the Dean vividly presented her touching story and her resilience to overcome all odds to earn her University education. She is extremely physically challenged but despite of her physical condition, Dr. Gray said Miss. Snyder worked hard to overcome all odds to achieve her goal.
Dr. Gray further indicated that the inspiring academic journey of Beatrice distinguishes her as a fine example to millions of others. Her story makes us to believe that “Disability is not Inability”. In spite of Beatrice Snyder extreme disability, she never gave up to compete with other students who are physically strong to reach her dream by earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language. Miss. Snyder is extraordinary, distinguished and a good example of positivity at the University of Liberia. Today, she has broken barriers to join the ranks of the successful alumni of the nation’s flagship institution of higher learning.
The “Most Outstanding Part-time Faculty” award was given to Mr. Paul Dominic Jarry who was praised for his outstanding service as best advisor of thesis, and quality teaching, While the “Most Outstanding Administrative Staff” award was received by Rec. Andrew T. Nagbe for his distinctive leadership, amazing services, commitment, dedication and professionalism in the running of the Dean’s Office and his diligent support towards the Dean in moving the college forward.
Also, the “Most Outstanding Student Leader” award was received by Mr. Abdulah Kamara, a cum laude graduate with Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. He has proved as the best student leader and stands out as the best among thousands of students at the college.
The ‘Humanity Award’ was given to a 14-year old Joshua Snyder, the Jr. brother of Beatrice Snyder. The Dean and entire ACS College is very truly grateful to this kid for his humanity and great services towards is extreme physically challenged sister. He is extraordinary and a very good child who deserves special recognition from every good Liberians.
The Philip N Wesseh Prestigious Academic Excellence Print Journalism Award was given to Mr. Rodney Sieh, Managing Editor of the Frontpage Africa Newspaper. He was selected from among about 500 journalists in the country for his outstanding and professional investigative journalism that impacts societies and go beyond Liberia’s borders.
Other honorees include: The Director-General.of NASSCORP, Hon . Dwelt vonBooms for his jumerous support to the College. The Amos C. Sawyer Educational Foundation was also honored for due to its praiseworthy support to the college, while the President of International Relation of Sharda University in India, Prof.Dr. Ashok Daryani was reveuved the Most Distinguished Honor Award.
The Chairman of the UL Board of Trustees, Senator Numene T.H Bartekwa was honored for his commitment and dedication to teaching as pro bono faculty in the College, and support towards the growth and development of Sawyer College. The Chairman of the College’s Thesis Committee, Assistant Prof Alexander O. Teaway was honored for his distinguished service to the college and University of Liberia.
