MONROVIA – The Senate Committee on Education, chaired by Margibi County Senator Nathaniel F. McGill, and the Committee on Public Administration have summoned key officials to appear before them on Thursday, September 4, 2025, to address pressing issues affecting Liberia’s education sector.
Minister of Education Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah has been called to present and discuss the Ministry’s comprehensive plans for the current fiscal year, including policy priorities for basic and secondary education, strategies for higher and technical education, scholarship administration, student welfare both domestically and abroad, and measures for improving learning outcomes, teacher training, and accountability in the system.
Dr. Layli Maparyan, President of the University of Liberia, is also expected to address the ongoing go-slow action by the University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA). Dr. Maparyan will present the University’s academic and administrative plans for the current academic year, provide detailed explanations regarding ULFA’s grievances, and outline specific remedial measures her administration is undertaking to resolve the impasse ahead of the new academic semester.
In addition, Hon. Dr. Augurine Stevens, Acting Superintendent of the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS), is required to respond to urgent concerns raised by Liberian scholarship students enrolled at Apecjay Stya University and Graphic Era University in India. These concerns include delayed tuition and related fee payments since December 2024, lack of medical insurance and stipends, and the imminent threat of expulsion from universities and hostel facilities due to unsettled obligations.
The media and public have been invited to attend the proceedings. Citizens are also encouraged to submit questions they would like the Committee to ask during the session.
The Senate Committee’s action reflects growing concern over accountability, student welfare, and the overall effectiveness of Liberia’s education system amid ongoing challenges.
