SETHI FERRO FABRIK STEEL FACTORY PENALIZED FOR DEADLY EXPLOSION

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has imposed a $5,000 penalty on Sethi Ferro Fabrik Steel Factory after a fatal explosion occurred at its oxygen plant in Gardnersville on February 17, 2025. The tragic blast, resulting from an oxygen cylinder rupture, led to the death of employee Saah J. Samukai.

An EPA investigation revealed critical safety breaches, including inadequate fire prevention measures, improper gas tank management, absence of emergency exits, and expired environmental permits. In response, the agency ordered the immediate shutdown of the facility on February 19.

Despite the violations, the EPA acknowledged the factory’s contribution in providing free medical oxygen to hospitals. Consequently, the agency has agreed to grant a temporary 90-day permit upon payment of the fine and the commencement of safety upgrades. A comprehensive environmental audit will be mandatory before full operations can resume.

The EPA has pledged to rigorously monitor compliance, underscoring its dedication to enforcing workplace safety and environmental regulations.
