MONROVIA – The Ministry of Justice has confirmed the escape of six inmates from the Barclayville Detention Center in Grand Kru County during the early hours of Sunday, July 6, 2025. The escape triggered immediate security measures, resulting in the swift recapture of one of the fugitives.
Edwin Lewis, 40, who had been charged with burglary, theft of property, and criminal conspiracy, was apprehended following a coordinated manhunt involving law enforcement and intelligence units. Authorities say efforts are underway to locate the remaining five escapees still at large.
The fugitives include Shadrach Williams, 33; William Wallace, 26; Johnny Brown, 28; Koffa Sieh, 30; and Jacob Weah, 16. Each of the escapees had been facing charges ranging from criminal conspiracy and burglary to theft of property.
According to the Ministry, security forces are working around the clock to ensure public safety and restore full security at the detention facility. The public is urged to remain calm but vigilant, and anyone with information that could assist the ongoing operation is encouraged to contact law enforcement officers immediately.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice has launched an internal investigation into the security breach to determine how the inmates escaped and to implement measures that will prevent future incidents.
The situation has drawn attention from multiple institutions, including the Liberia National Police and the U.S. Embassy near Monrovia. Public confidence remains high that authorities will bring the situation under control and ensure accountability in the prison system.
