SOS VILLAGES IN LIBERIA CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION TO STRENGTHEN FAMILIES ON INTERNATIONAL FAMILIES DAY

Date:

MONROVIA – As SOS Villages in Liberia joins international organizations in celebrating the 30th anniversary of International Families Day, National Director Mr. Prosper Ndione is urging immediate actions to strengthen families in the country.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, the International Day of Families aims to highlight the challenges families face, promote togetherness, and raise awareness of issues impacting families, including social, economic, and demographic factors.

The event was colorfully celebrated, with Mr. Ndione emphasizing the theme: “Strengthen Families for a Sustainable Future.” He highlighted the ongoing challenges to family stability and called for robust actions from national government entities and stakeholders to support families, as the well-being, protection, and development of children depend on the strength and resilience of their families.

“The International Families Day is not just a symbolic observance; it is a call to action declared by the world body. We cannot afford to overlook the critical role of families in shaping the future of children. It is imperative that we prioritize investment in strong social and child protection systems to ensure that families receive the necessary support and resources,” said Mr. Ndione.

He stressed the need for comprehensive family support programs that address economic, social, and emotional needs, and highlighted the importance of preventing unnecessary family separation and promoting family reunification where feasible.
